PressPi Website

Hello Everyone.  As you might have noticed from my previous piece, I used software provided by PressPi to launch my new site.  It is an amazing tool that allows the user to simply plug-and-play their very own website.  So I thought for my first post that I would discuss the basics so that you too can launch your own site.  Now before you start getting any wild ideas, there are some limitations to what you can do.  Because you will be hosting a website on a Raspberry Pi instead of a large server, there will be a finite amount of traffic you can manage.  Sorry, Beyoncé, but this might not be the best way to host your own website.  Furthermore, PressPi only provides software to run a WordPress blog from your home.  That being said, let’s dive right on in.

First, you are going to need equipment.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 (Previous models may work, like the 2 or B+, but not the Zero)
  • A high speed Micro SD Card
  • Micro USB Power Supply (if you don’t already have like 1,000 of them just lying around)
  • Ethernet Cable (You can use WiFi, but it won’t be as fast or stable)
  • Case (Optional but it is advisable as you don’t want to break anything)

Next, you’ll need a few downloads.

Once you have all of that, you are ready to begin.  Start by using SD Formatter to format you SD card.  This will erase anything that is on there and re-partition the whole card.  (NOTE: Be sure to only select the drive you wish to format, otherwise you will lose everything on the drive you do select)  Once you have done that, open up Etcher.  Etcher is going to write the disc image onto the SD Card.  The first step requires you to select the image you want to burn.  Select the PressPi image, the second step should then become unlocked.  From there you will need to select the drive you just formatted.  You can now begin the final step and write the image onto the SD Card.  After a few minutes, voilà, you have an operating system installed on your SD Card.

Assemble your Raspberry Pi components, insert your newly minted SD Card OS, and power it up.  Shortly after the Pi powers up, you will be prompted to enter a username and password, these are “pi” and “raspberry”.  Use the command “ifconfig” to see the local IP address your router has assigned to the Pi.  From your computer, type in the IP address of your Pi in to the address bar of your web browser.  If all is working well, you will see your very own website.  There will be two articles there, one providing you with details on you website (passwords, usernames, etc.) and the other giving you instructions (set up, security, port forwarding, etc.).  Simply follow those instructions and before you know it you will be hosting your very own blog.  Have fun and let me know how it goes in the comments.
